'Pole Dance', a doll that appears to dance around a pole, has caused outrage after a photo hit the Internet. Gizmodo.com

Well ok, maybe.

A grainy photo of a supposed new toy for girls is causing a frenzy.
“Pole Dance” is a doll that, well yes that’s right you’ve got it, pole dances.
The photo which appeared first on the gadget blog Gizmodo.com, show the boxed doll. A cherub like brown haired doll in a green dress holding onto a dance pole and standing on a podium that says pole dancer on it.
Hoax or a real toy parents were screaming up and down the country proclaiming the end of civilization as we know it.
Miniature Batteries and dollar bills not included.

It does look pretty real, but it just seems too over the top to be real.

A writer from Gizmodo said that the pole dance doll is probably authentic and looks like it came from Asia.

“As far as I can tell, it’s a real product. It didn’t seem Photoshopped to me. said Gizmodo.com’s Jesus Diaz.

The doll is allegedly inspired by Miley Cyrus’ Teen Choice Awards pole dance.

The doll is supposed to danceround the pole when the music is turned on, and she dances “up and down” and “round and round”.

Miley Cyrus Pole Dancing at Teen Choice Awards

Pole Dancing at the Teen Choice Awards?

Miley Cyrus pole dancing at Teen Choice Awards

Miley Cyrus pole dancing at Teen Choice Awards

Pole dancing once a taboo style of dance mainly danced by strippers and associated with seedy clubs has continued to become more mainstream over the past few years.
The US Teen Choice Awards happen every year and they offer teens the opportunity to vote for their favourite singers, movies and songs.

Miley Cyrus pole dancing steels the show

This year’s Teen Choice Awards was broadcast on 10th August. It consisted of the awards presentations and had performances from a few young and teen acts.
The performance given by Miley Cyrus that night certainly stole most of the publicity.

She performed her latest single Party in the USA. Halfway through the song she climbed on top of an ice-cream cart and danced against a pole. Now you can see from the video that she certainly wasn’t pole dancing. Sure, she was holding on to the pole, and dancing provocatively, but really I don’t agree with the press criticism that she has received. It looks like she used the pole more for balance and while she was certainly intending to dance with the pole, she was hardly dancing that provocatively.
Some people have drawn parallels with Britney Spears career and her pole dancing back in 2004. Both Britney and Miley Cyrus got their break on the Disney.

It’s believed that as most past Disney stars, Miley now wants to escape from her clean cut image and appeal to a more adult market.

Parents disgusted by pole dancing Disney star

That’s fine of course but unfortunately has left many parents complaining.
Miley Cyrus is a role model for younger girls and parents are not happy that she is starting to adapt an older sexier image and believe that Miley Cyrus pole dancing is unacceptableable behaviour. Parents are also disgruntled about reports that Miley Cyrus’s 9 year old sister was seen pole dancing backstage before the show.
When asked his opinion Miley Cyrus’s father Billy Ray Cyrus said:

“You know what? I just think that Miley loves entertaining people. She loves singing and songwriting.”

Critics of course disapproved of this response and are moaning that pole dancing is getting out of hand and becoming a problem and a dilemma for society.

Why not watch the Miley Cyrus Pole Dancing video yourself and make up your own mind.

History of pole dancing – part 1

Posted on 23 July 2009 by Miss Pole Dance

So where does pole dancing come from?

Pole dancing stems from various forms of ancient exotic dance. Its origins go back further than you might think but where exactly the style of pole dance that we are familiar with to day came from is the subject of much debate and confusion as many different styles of exotic dance have influenced pole dancing over the years.

Striptease:

The first striptease in history goes back to the days of Inanna the goddess of love in Sumerian times. This myth tells of her decent into Hades to find her lover Damouz. She removed a veil and a jewel ate each one of the seven gates of Hades. While she was in Hades and away form the earth it fell barren until her return when it was again fruitful.
This myth is believed by some to have evolved into the famous “Dance of the Seven Veils of Salome” from the bible. Some people believe this to be where striptease came from.

Belly Dancing:

Belly dancing is also thought to be one of the many inspirations behind pole dancing. It evolved from the ancient Middle East where it was thought to have powers of fertility. Belly dancing is believed to have been spread throughout Europe by the gypsies.

Rumba and Tango:

Both the sensual dances of the Rumba and tango are believed to have had some influence and like pole dancing they were rather controversial in their time.

Maypole dancing:

Pole dancing has also been linked back to the pagan ritual of maypole dancing. Maypole dancing was originally a pagan fertility dance with roots in the 12th century. It was later adapted by the Victorians who turned it into a more innocent form of dance removing its association with fertility.

Burlesque:

Striptease was said to have been added to burlesque shows in the 1900s as to lure back the make audience. Famous dancers and strippers to part in these strip burlesque shows including Gypsy Lee Rose. By the 1950’s burlesque had started to become more acceptable.

Travelling tent shows:

In the American depression of the 1920s fairs used to travel from town to town.
They had a great variety of sideshows. One of which was the Hoochi Coochi dancers who performed and erotic style dance act using the pole at the centre of the tent to dance around.  The tent pole then got its name dance pole.
These travelling acts with striptease shows began to use the pole in the centre of the tent to dance around.

Circus:

Some of the acrobatic and aerial performances in the circus have similarities and use similar moves and techniques to pole dancing.
